My Practice
A 'gestalt' is an organised whole that is perceived as more than the sum of its parts. So, for example, when we look at this picture we may see a face - or maybe a saxaphone player or maybe both. We make meaning of what we see, what we hear and what we experience.
Gestalt asks 'how?' and 'what?' - not why; As your therapist I am curious about your actual experience now - not how you should be or how you should do things. In working in this way I canhelp you find ways of expanding your choices to live your life more fully.
My professional interest is in exploring the psychological attributes of our 'here and now' physical experience as adults and how these experiences can inform how we made contact with our environment and families developmentally. We work with what movement we have, not with what we don't have. This uses the work of Ruella Frank, Ph. D. - find out more here.
As we grow and mature we don’t discard our childhood and suddenly become adults; the process of living is gradual and layered and every experience and relationship throughout our lives becomes part of who we are.
In the first year of our lives we are completely dependent on our care givers and environment for survival. In this time we learn how to interact with our environment to meet our needs of safety, pleasure and comfort. We learn what happens when we use the fundamental movements of yield, push, reach, grasp, pull & release. We are able to raise our awareness and make meanings by exploring how we use these patterns now, within a Gestalt framework and in relation to the other person in the therapy room.
